Senate Caucus on International Narcotics Control to Hold Hearing on
U.S. Counternarcotics Efforts in Afghanistan
July 13, 2011
Washington, DC – Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), Chairman of the Senate Caucus on International Narcotics Control, and Co-Chairman Senator Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), will hold a hearing on Wednesday, July 20 at 2:30 p.m. on U.S. counternarcotics efforts in Afghanistan.
The hearing will examine the production, sale and distribution of illicit drugs in Afghanistan which funds the Taliban, corrupts public officials, and undermines political stability and the rule of law. The hearing will also examine future counternarcotics efforts in the country as U.S. troop levels are reduced in the coming years.
In 2010, the Caucus released a report called U.S. Counternarcotics Strategy in Afghanistan, a comprehensive report examining U.S. efforts to combat illegal drug production and distribution in the country.
